Endorsement of Alternative 2,
an Avant-garde Museum

collaged Donald Barthelme’s time as an art museum director

2016

Endorsement of Alternative 2, an Avant-garde Museum, in Mr. Barthelme’s Memorandum of July 10, 1961.

was a 14 page collage spread with essay cowritten by Adrienne Perry, in Gulf Coast 29.1.

While excavating the archive of the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, I found traces of the author’s authorship of the institution. I had a blast digging in his archives as well, understanding how being a museum director had effected his writing, and reconfiguring all these primary source materials to tell a little more of that story, using lots of his own words and imagery. It was extra fun to play with and burst the margins, which is what he had advocated to do with the museum, and to reinsert this energetic and crowded account back into the journal that he founded. It was built for print, but you can download a rough PDF below.
